Spiritual und Gospel erlebten in den 1960er-Jahren in Europa ein Revival - als vokalmusikalische Wurzeln der Black Music und vor allem des Jazz. Der aber hatte kein gutes Image bei hiesigen Kirchenvertretern. So verbot der Freiburger Erzbischof damals einen Rundfunkmitschnitt des "American Spiritual and Gospel Festival" in Kirchen seiner Diözese. Man wich in die Klosterkirche des Schwarzwaldortes Alpirsbach und den Freiburger Paulussaal aus. Dort traten im Januar 1965 Bishop Kelsey and His Congregation, Ines Andrews & The Andrewettes und die Five Blind Boys from Mississippi auf.
