Rachel Portman - der Name der britischen Komponistin und Pianistin war 1997 plötzlich in aller Munde. Der Grund: Als erste Frau hatte sie den begehrten Oscar für ihre Musik zum Film "Emma" erhalten. Aber schon zuvor hatte sie zahlreiche Filme mit ihren Melodien "veredelt". Tagtäglich sitzt sie am Klavier ihres Studios in Sussex, schaut hinaus auf Büsche, Bäume und Schafe und arbeitet hart an ihren Themen zu "Chocolat", "Oliver Twist", "Die Herzogin" uvm. Gerne hält sie ihre Musik "reduziert" um dem Film und der Magie der Bilder zu dienen. Im Unspektakulären liegt das Spektakuläre dieser Melodien-Wanderin.
