Statistics One-in-eight of the population is an immigrant

Around 10.6 million of the population in Germany are immigrants. That means that one-in-eight of the approximately 82 million inhabitants of the country are classified as coming from abroad.

On average an immigrant has been living in Germany for 21 years, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Taken together with their descendants, there are around 15.7 million people living in the country with foreign roots. That is around one-fifth of the population.

The number of immigrants has increased slightly over the last five years. Around half of all immigrants had a German passport in 2010. The most important country of origin remains Turkey, providing 1.5 million immigrants. In second place, comes Poland, with 1.1 million, followed by the Russian federation providing 1 million immigrants.
