The controversial "attitude" part of the citizenship test in Baden-Württemberg which subjected some would-be German citizens, often Muslims, to questioning about their attitude to democratic principles has now become history. The Integration Minister Bilkay Öney has ordered officials to rely solely on the standard citizenship test.
Bilkay Öney the minister for integration in the new Baden-Württemberg coalition government, revoked the administrative instrument used under the former centre-right government that stipulated a catalogue of questions for some people wanting to become German citizens. Critics had said that the regulation meant that the catalogue was used primarily with Muslims and, hence was discriminatory.
Announcing the repeal of the administrative order on Friday, the ministry explained that the effect of the repealed interview catalogue had been minimal.
