German Child and Youth Welfare Association Conference More pre-school teachers with integration roots needed

The Child and Youth Welfare Association wants to see the trebling of pre-school teachers with an immigrant background. The association believes the growing need for trained personnel in the field calls for such action.

At least 20 per cent of those involved in child-care in kindergartens, pre-school facilities and nurseries should have an immigrant background, according to the chairperson of the Child and Youth Welfare Association (AGJ), Norbert Struck, in an interview with the German daily `Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung´. "At the moment it is (only) seven to eight per cent" explained Struck in the interview. The background is that, as in other areas of the job-market, there is a dearth of skilled workers.

The German Child and Youth Welfare Association Conference starts in Stuttgart on Tuesday and immigrant children in pre-school facilities and their education will be one of the topics under discussion.

The association's chairperson Struck attacked the government ahead of the conference. Over the last few years child protection and child-care had been in focus, but "there was scarcely an independent youth policy", said Struck.
